It was great to hear about the great things the Disability Confident scheme is doing and the people it has helped. We at Kennedy Scott are committed to helping disabled people and trying our hardest to fight the stigma that those with disabilities often experience. We believe in building an inclusive culture and attracting diverse talent to help serve our customers. Since becoming a Disability Confident Leader, our dedicated disability champion, Simon Bates has been fundamental in promoting disability confident throughout the company and encouraging other companies, including our own supply chain to become Disability Confident themselves.
Disability Confident is a scheme championed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), designed to provide employers with guidance and acknowledgement for recruiting, retaining and developing disabled employees; it was developed with employers, disability charities and disabled people and around 10,000 employers across the country have already signed up to the scheme.
The event consisted of presentations from DWP staff about specific government support available to assist employers and employees with disabilities and health conditions; motivational speakers; and case studies from local employers Total Communication, Thames Water and Microsoft, demonstrating how taking on those with disabilities and health conditions was positive for both the employer and the employee.
Following the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to speak more informally with employers who have already signed up to Disability Confident, to learn about the steps they have taken and the benefits their businesses had gained as a result of employing experienced and highly qualified people with disabilities and health conditions.
