According to the Mental Health Foundation around a quater of the population will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year, with mixed anxiety and depression being the most common mental disorder in Britain. So it is no surprise that the NHS claim almost 50% of long-term absences from work are due to mental health issues. Is self-employment a better option for those that suffer from poor mental health? Louise, 32, shares her story.

I joined the Kennedy Scott Work Programme a few months after leaving College where I had studied and achieved a National Diploma in Media. On completion of my Diploma I had no direction, I didn’t know what I really wanted to do, which led me to apply for any job role going.

Jason, 44, was made jobless when his contract with the Royal Mail was terminated after ten years service. Jason had been a hardworking and loyal employee working as a postman. Jason was out of work for a few years before he was referred to Kennedy Scott Dover on the Work Programme in July 2013.

Chris, 34 from Dover had been out of work since 1999 due to health issues and was referred to the Work Programme in September 2013.


Having a previous criminal record and a gap of unemployment spanning over a decade on his CV there was a lack of response to his applications. Chris also had personal commitments, looking after his young son and an unwell mother.

Catching Lives






Mental Health workshop in Canterbury- 21 August 2014 


On Thursday 21 August Kennedy Scott invited Kent based Homeless charity- Catching Lives, who work predominantly with the homeless and vulnerable adults in Canterbury, to deliver a mental health awareness workshop for Kennedy Scott Employment Consultants. The workshop was held in Kennedy Scott's Canterbury centre by Karen Baxter, a qualified Mental Health nurse.

Kennedy Scott Learner wins ALW Award


A KS learner in Luton, Marie Mitchell, has won the Achiever of the Year award at the Learning Partnership Awards in Shuttleworth College in Bedford.


Marie, who has been a learner with Kennedy Scott for almost two years as part of the over 50s programme funded by the European Social Fund and Luton Borough Council, was recognized by the judges for her outstanding learner achievements.

Travelodge Trial to Triumph


A brand new purpose built Travel Lodge hotel opened in early 2012 and Kennedy Scott made contact soon after opening. Kennedy Scott’s unique offer of a personalised recruitment and selection programme, incorporating screening and matching specific job ready clients to current vacancies, was soon taken up by Elly Watson, Hotel Manager. An excellent employer relationship ensued between our two organisations and resulted in several successful job outcomes in all areas of the hotel.


One particular customer, Sheldon, who had been un-employed for several years was employed as the Breakfast Chef and has now been working there for over 18 months. Having found employment in an environment in which he excels, i.e. customer service and hospitality, he is firmly established as one of the key team members of Travelodge Gateway, Hemel Hempstead, and has been highly commended by name in hotel reviews on Tripadvisor.
