Job for life not just for Christmas
With many London retailers announcing low volumes of sales during the new quarter Kennedy Scott decided to investigate this matter further. We analysed the number of candidates starting employment throughout our London programmes during the first three months of 2005. The results reflect the reported slow down from London retailers.

CBI Head of Economic Analysis Doug Godden, said: "Retailers had been expecting stronger sales growth in March but for the third month in a row volumes failed to meet expectations. Some of this poor performance might be attributed to the wintry weather at the start of March and reluctance for consumers to spend ahead of the Budget. But there is no doubt that sales growth has slowed on an underlying basis since the turn of the year."

We can see from the chart below retail is ahead of admin & other jobs by only 2% compared to a massive 20% in the run up to Christmas. This trend may be related to the reports of lower volume sales during the 1st quarter of 2005. Other upward changes were within the construction jobs up 1% and hospitality / leisure jobs up 3%. However the same can not be said for the warehouse / driver position which was down by 4 % and training jobs were down by 3%. Further analysis work will be carried out to monitor the job trends this Summer.
