Sue Pavey, Women into Security |
Sue is one of the first participants of our new Women in Security programme to find work. When she joined the programme she had been unemployed for around three years and was attending the Southwark Employment Zone, delivered by Work Directions for six months. After about six months on the EZ programme Sue’s adviser suggested the Women in Security course to her. Although Sue had not previously considered security work she decided to go along to the open day and find out what it was all about. Right from the first day Sue was struck by how friendly KS staff Annie, Kat and Catherine were. She also immediately clicked with the twelve other women on the course and remains good friends with them now. She found that being in a women only group really helped to put her at ease. The course involves security training, which was delivered to Sue’s group by Steve from SITO. Sue describes Steve as brilliant and completely approachable and with his help she passed her test and gained a SITO accredited qualification. Sue’s CV was circulated to employers who had expressed an interest in hiring women as security staff and within a week she and all the other women on her course was invited to interview by the security firm Sectaguard. Within another her week Sectaguard asked if she would interested in working for St Guy’s hospital and arranged an interview for her at St Guy’s. Sue has now settled in to her role at the hospital, which involves assisting the public and patrolling her building. While everything has gone smoothly so far she feels that if a confrontational situation should arise her training has given the confidence to deal with it.
